Screen Time (Cdn Pediatric Soc. & MediaSmarts)

On June1st, the Canadian Pediatric Society posted an article/position statement titled  Screen time and young children: Promoting health and development in a digital world the purpose of which was “to examines the potential benefits and risks of screen media in children under 5 years old, focusing on developmental, psychosocial and physical health.”

The recommendations include the following:

  • Screen time for children under 2 years old is not recommended.
  • For children 2 to 5 years, limit routine or regular screen time to under 1 hour per day.
  • Ensure that sedentary screen time is not a routine part of child care for children younger than 5 years old.
  • Maintain daily ‘screen-free’ times, especially for family meals and book-sharing.
  • Avoid screens for at least one hour before bedtime, given the potential for melatonin-suppressing effects.

And MediaSmarts posted a tip sheet titled Four Tips for Managing Your Kids Screen Time [pdf] – based on the position statement from the Canadian Pediatric Society . The 4 tips are:

  • Minimize screen use, especially for the youngest children
  • Use screens mindfully, as an activity you choose, rather than as something that is on in the background or that you turn on as a habit
  • Mitigate media effects by curating your children’s media, setting household rules, and co-viewing when possible
  • Model good media use for your kids

Here are some freely available Internet resources on this topic:

Want more? TDSB teachers may request articles by contacting the Professional Library at (416) 395-8289 or professionallibrary@tdsb.on.ca.

And remind your students about the Toronto Public Library about the summer reading club. Kids can track their reading online and find great books and fun stuff to do.
