Submitted by Natalie c., one of our fabulous reference librarians:

The TDSB Professional Library has created an updated resource list of JK-12 fiction and multimedia materials supporting the May Character Education trait: Integrity! The full list is available through the Professional Library AW Character Education List forum.

Here are some highlights:

Elementary Titles

  • 🍁 Over-Scheduled Andrew by A. Spires: After taking on more activities than he can handle, Andrew realizes that it’s more important to focus on a few things that he loves — including his friends.
  • 🍁 Good Pirate by M. Fergus: The daughter of a pirate, Augusta tries to be “rotten, sneaky, and brainy” like the other pirates but ultimately she realizes that it’s best to just be herself.

Intermediate Titles

  • 🍁 Lucky Jonah by R. Scrimger: Jonah learns the importance of being truthful to himself and others after he gets to walk a mile (literally) in other people’s shoes.
  • 🍁 Sea Change by F. Viva: While disappointed he has to spend the summer with his great-uncle in Nova Scotia, Eliot works hard to adapt to his surroundings and grow into himself as a young man.

Young Adult Titles

  • Draw the Line by L. Linn: Adrian Piper has a hard time finding a group in which he feels like he belongs. Only when a friend is attacked is Adrian forced to step up and stand up for what he believes in.
  • Every Exquisite Thing by M. Quick: Inspired by her favourite book, Nanette leaves behind her “ordinary” life for one of adventure and ends up finding out more about her true self along the way.

These resource lists are produced to support teacher-librarians and teachers as they deliver instruction regarding the Character Education initiative and may be appropriate for read-alouds, literature circles, library displays, and more.

Please note the following points:

  • These are selected resources based on favourable literature reviews;
  • The Professional Library may own some of the listed books; teachers should also check their school libraries or local public libraries for availability;
  • Teachers should preview the books for appropriateness before instructional use or recommending them to students.
  • Related media resources are selected from TDSB Teaching Resources and the TDSB Virtual Library.
