June 1-8 is Canada Learning Code Week

Canada Learning Code ‘s web page mission is to “EQUIP, EDUCATE AND EMPOWER CANADIANS TO THRIVE IN OUR INCREASINGLY DIGITAL AND GLOBAL ECONOMY”  and they “will drive the development and implementation of an action plan to create 10 million meaningful technology education experiences for Canadians over the next 10 years. Through program design and delivery, strategic industry and public partnerships, educator training, research, advocacy and awareness we aim to unify coding education in Canada and drive results.”

They are making a guide available for free. “Discover tips and tricks to get started, familiarize yourself with code, and follow along with beginner-friendly coding activities – on or off the computer.” The lessons are uber-Canadian…you will need to register to access these. Learn or volunteer your experience.

CEA: Integrating newcomers

The Canadian Education Association (CEA) has released a new document in the Facts on Education series, titled What is the Best Way to Integrate Newcomer students into School and Classrooms? [pdf]

The one-page document, authored by the CEA and Faculty of Education at the University of Quebec @ Montreal discusses 3 main points:

  • Implementing a welcoming protocol that (1) documents students path before arriving at school; (2) prepares class to receive the student (3) helps student adapt to the new school)
  • Conduct a detailed assessment of prior learning and provide linguistic support
  • Help parents understand the school system

I am sure that most school in large urban centers have similar programs in place, but this provides basic info none the less. Note that this also complements the CEA’s latest issue of Education Canada all about immigrant students.
