Visual Voice for Diverse Learners is the title of an article in the January/February 2017 issue of Principal, pp 28-31.

From page 29: “A strategy to bridge communications gaps and increase students achievement is encouraging learners to make their thinking visible through art. Art-integrated education is a cross -curricular way to engage with the arts to  build knowledge and competency in reading, math, science, social studies, art, and other subjects. Sketching, designing, drawing, painting and constructing tangible models provide students with a visual voice.”

This short article includes the following sections:

  • visualization builds reading comprehension
  • art builds cross-cultural understanding
  • art opens a window – to see thinking
  • Communicating visually spurs teacher development
  • and then 8 tips to integrate an art-infused, culturally responsive teaching strategy.

One resource referred to by the author Cheri Sterman, includes: Art as a tool for teachers of English language learners (2010, New York State Education Department)
