The Canadian Education Association website is  making available a free  downloadable poster titled 10 best practices for welcoming new students at . This resource  supports the CEA’s Spring 2017 issue of Education Canada – a theme issue titled Welcoming Newcomer Students.

We transform speech into text, then analyze and index it to create the deepest database of podcasts and radio in the English language. You can search phrases, shows, topics, networks (like CBC)  or people, and sign up for a Pod-A-Day podcast.

Librivox is a website containing public domain books for free in an audio format although note that ” LibriVox recordings are Public Domain in the USA. If you are not in the USA, please verify the copyright status of these works in your own country before downloading, otherwise you may be violating copyright laws”. You can search their catalog by author,title. genre/subject and language.

These sites may have good resources for students who are not strong readers and others whose learning is reinforced by listening.

Useable Knowledge website from Harvard Graduate School of Ed

The Harvard Graduate School of Education has a website titled Usable Knowledge . From their about page”

“Usable Knowledge is an online resource from the Harvard Graduate School of Education that aims to make education research and best practices accessible to educators, policymakers, members of the media, nonprofit leaders, entrepreneurs, and parents.

Our goal is to put smart, trustworthy, and useful information directly into the hands of practitioners, who can use it to make a difference in their classrooms, schools, districts, universities, and communities.”

There are articles, blog, videos searchable by topics from Arts to Testing.

Check out this Canadiana website – great for researchers, secondary students

Canadian is a database of digitized Canadian historical documents contributed by libraries, archives and universities across Canada including University of Toronto, Bibliothèque et Archives Nationale du Québec, TPL and many more. Documents include periodicals (journals & newspapers), images, digitized books and other ephemera. Think primary documents.

You can search the Canadiana Discovery Portal here:

Through this portal, you’re searching through all of Canadiana’s collections. You can change the interface to French and find French documents. You can also search each of Canadiana’s collections individually.

Canadiana has 4 main collections:

  • Early Canadiana Online (monographs, government documents, periodicals) related to law, literature, religion, education, women’s history and aboriginal history
  • Héritage: Microfilm from Library & Archives Canada, archival documents from individual fonds, focus on politics, arts, literature, military, aboriginal history, women’s history
  • Public Collections: Digital collections from partner libraries & universities, contains full periodicals, eBooks and other documents
  • Student Voice: An initiative of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries – online portal to growing historical collections from post-secondary students between 1945-2000

Unesco on learning objectives for sustainable development

Unesco has released a new document titled Education for Sustainable Development  Goals: Learning Objectives  (ESD)

On 25 September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UN, 2015) – there are 17 goals, see image below.

“ESD aims at developing competencies that empower individuals to reflect on their own actions, taking into account their current and future social, cultural, economic and environmental impacts, from a local and a global perspective. Individuals should also be empowered to act in complex situations in a sustainable manner, which may require them to strike out in new directions; and to participate in socio-political processes, moving their societies towards sustainable development.” (p. 7).

This resource discusses key competencies for sustainability (There is general agreement that sustainability citizens need to have certain key competencies that allow them to engage constructively and responsibly with today’s world.p. 10) and a series of objective to support the 17 goals.
