Book clubs, family Literacy, freedom to read – Oh My!

January 16, 2017 at 8:00 am 1 comment

Winter and reading go together like milk and cookies!  Here are some literacy events to make reading more of a shared activity with family, colleagues or in the classroom.

January 27 is Family Literacy Day. Barbara Reid, award-winning Canadian author and illustrator, is the Honourary Chair of Family Literacy Day! You can check out her video on the ABC Life Literacy Canada site as well as free activity ideas, resources, posters.

February 26 to March 4 is Freedom to Read Week (censorship is a great secondary school topic). You can obtain kits and posters from the website. Note that there is a cost for the 2017 kit, but previous years may be downloaded.

TeachOntario is offering 2 book clubs – one on The Secret Path by Gord Downie and Jeff Lamire and facilitated by TDSB’s Diana Maliszewski (TDSB TL and editor of The Teaching Librarian, the official magazine of the Ontario School Library Association) IN ADDITION TO  the regular book club series including the following titles .

  • “The Jaguar’s Children” by John Valliant (February 21-March 31)
  • “Station Eleven” by Emily St. John Mandel (April 1-30)
  • “Dive Into Inquiry: Learning and Empower Student Voice” by Trevor MacKenzie (May 1-31) NOTE: The Professional Library has one copy of this [here]

So many books so little time! Get you reading on! Rowan

Hi there! I love your posts, Rowan and I forward many (most) of them to my colleagues. Thank you. I noticed a minor error: Family Literacy Day is on the 27th of January, not the 22nd.
