January Character Education Resource Lists: Spotlight on Teamwork

The TDSB Professional Library has created an updated resource list of JK-12 fiction and multimedia materials supporting the January Character Education trait: Teamwork!

Here are some highlights:

Elementary Titles

  • 🍁 Scribble by R. Ohi: When Circle, Square and Triangle encounter an erratic scribble, they head off on an adventure as a team.
  • The Quickest Kid in Clarksville by P.Z. Miller: When an Olympic runner comes to town, Alta learns that teamwork is an important part of success.

Intermediate Titles

  • 🍁 The Beautiful Game by D. Skuy: David’s soccer team falls apart when plans to build a factory nearby divides the team into families that need the jobs the factory will provide and those that worry about the factory’s impact on the environment.
  • Ghost by J. Reynolds: Constantly getting into trouble, Ghost must learn to be a team player if he wants to reach his full potential.

Young Adult Titles

  • 🍁 Convictions by J. Silverthorne: Travelling on a convict ship to a penal colony in Australia, Jennie bonds with her fellow prisoners to survive the journey.
  • The Boys in the Boat by D.J. Brown: A group of working class boys from America showed immense teamwork to defeat the German team rowing for Hitler at the 1936 Olympics.

These resource lists are produced to support teacher-librarians and teachers as they deliver instruction regarding the Character Education initiative and may be appropriate for read-alouds, literature circles, library displays, and more.

Please note the following points:

  • These are selected resources based on favourable literature reviews;
  • The Professional Library may own some of the listed books; teachers should also check their school libraries or local public libraries for availability;
  • Teachers should preview the books for appropriateness before instructional use or recommending them to students.
  • Related media resources are selected from TDSB Teaching Resources and the TDSB Virtual Library.
