Report measures fundraising in TDSB Schools in relation to EQAO scores

The C.D Howe Institute  has published a report by researcher/authors Huijie Guo and David R Johnson titled Unfair Advantage? School fundraising capabilities and student results that measured the association of funds raised in Toronto District School Board (TDSB) elementary schools with educational outcomes, and concluded that fundraising plays only a minor role in making schools more unequal. Fundraising is not central to understanding what drives variation in school academic outcomes. As a result, other sources of the variation in school results beyond social and economic background and fundraising should be the focus of policymakers’ investigative efforts.

Andrea Gordon’s article Fundraising won’t up text scores, report says appears in the Toronto Star January 10, 2017, p GT3 and she includes a reaction/statement by Annie Kidder from People for Education. “The difference in experiences for those students — and not their test results — is the reason for rising concern over the inequity created by fundraising, says Annie Kidder, “I’m not sure anybody has ever said fundraising has an impact on EQAO scores,” she adds. The difference is seen “in overall quality of education rather than a score in one grade in reading, writing or math.”
