Something to celebrate/volunteer/lesson plan for September 2017 is the Invictus Games, hosted in Toronto September 23 – 30 2017.

From the website:

“Following a visit in 2013 to the US-based Warrior Games for wounded, ill and injured military personnel and veterans, Prince Harry  was inspired to create an expanded international version…The Invictus Games demonstrate soldiers’ and veterans’ indefatigable drive to overcome and the power of sport on their journey to recovery.”

“Adaptive sport (or parasport) is competitive sport for individuals with disabilities. Adaptive sport closely resembles the sport played by able-bodied athletes, but with some modifications to the rules and equipment to better meet the needs of participants. In forming competitive teams, disabilities are generally classified by broad groups, such as physical, cognitive/developmental delays or both, allowing participants to compete against players with the same skill level.”

The October 2016 issue of JOPERD includes an article by Lauren Lieberman titled Infusing paralympic sport and concepts into the physical education curriculum. Lieberman’s examples include:

  • integrating a paralympic day/week to the curriculum
  • offering a paralympic night at your school
  • hosting role models to speak to students
  • watching videos on paralympic sports

TDSB teachers may contact the Library to request a copy of the article.
