October Character Education Trait Resource Lists: Spotlight on Responsibility

The TDSB Professional Library has created an updated resource list of JK-12 fiction and multimedia materials supporting the October Character Education trait: Responsibility!

The full list is available through the Professional Library AW Character Education List forum. Current and archived lists are also available through the Google Drive: *note: you must be logged in to your TDSB Google Account to view.

Here are some highlights:

Elementary Titles

Intermediate Titles

  • 🍁 Memoirs of a Sidekick by D. Skuy: Unpopular Boris feels a sense of responsibility to run for school president against the favoured candidate, Robert, the class bully.
  • 🍁 On Cue by C. Watson: Randi must balance her responsibilities at home to her brother who has special needs with her own dreams of becoming an actress.

Young Adult Titles

  • 🍁 The Smell of Others People’s Houses by B-S. Hitchcock: The intertwining stories of four teens, each struggling to balance a sense of responsibility to their parents and siblings with their own desires for freedom.
  • 🍁 And Then the Sky Exploded by D. A. Poulsen: Chris grapples with the concept of responsibility when he learns that his grandfather was part of the team that developed the atomic bomb that fell on Hiroshima during World War II.

These resource lists are produced to support teacher-librarians and teachers as they deliver instruction regarding the Character Education initiative and may be appropriate for read-alouds, literature circles, library displays, and more.

Please note the following points:

  • These are selected resources based on favourable literature reviews;
  • The Professional Library may own some of the listed books; teachers should also check their school libraries or local public libraries for availability;
  • Teachers should preview the books for appropriateness before instructional use or recommending them to students.
  • Related media resources are selected from TDSB Teaching Resources and the TDSB Virtual Library.
