Submitted by Natalie C, one of our fabulous reference librarians:

The TDSB Professional Library has created an updated resource list of JK-12 fiction and multimedia materials supporting the September Character Education trait: Respect!

The full list is available through the Professional Library AW Character Education List forum. Current and archived lists are also available through the Google Drive: http://goo.gl/zKYnEx *note: you must be logged in to your TDSB Google Account to view.

Here are some highlights:

Elementary Titles

  • 🍁 Our First Caribou Hunt by J. Noah & C. Giroux: Two Inuit children are taken on a hunting trip with their father and learn the importance of “pay[ing their] catch the proper respect.”
  • 🍁 The Artist and Me by S. Peacock: An old man who bullied the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh as a child looks back on his choices and considers the respect he holds for the artist today.

Intermediate Titles

  • 🍁 The Hill by K. Bass: When Jared’s private jet crashes in the Canadian wilderness, Kyle, a Cree boy, comes to his rescue. To survive, they each must come to respect the other’s skills, talents, and history.

  • 🍁 Three Feathers by R. van Camp: As punishment for robbing the home of an elderly man, three teenage boys are sent to live on the land for 9 months where they receive guidance from a pair of elders who teach them the importance of respect.

These resource lists are produced to support teacher-librarians and teachers as they deliver instruction regarding the Character Education initiative and may be appropriate for read-alouds, literature circles, library displays, and more.

Please note the following points:

  • These are selected resources based on favourable literature reviews;
  • The Professional Library may own some of the listed books; teachers should also check their school libraries or local public libraries for availability;
  • Teachers should preview the books for appropriateness before instructional use or recommending them to students.
  • Related media resources are selected from TDSB Teaching Resources and the TDSB Virtual Library.
