Toronto Star article examines Ontario’s new 2-year teacher education program

On June 9, 2016, Toronto Star reporter Louise Brown wrote an article titled Longer Teachers’ Training Spells Financial Trouble (p.GT4).

“The new program — which also halved the number of education spots at every Ontario faculty of education — was meant to stem the wave of rookies into a flooded job market and give them more time to polish their skills in everything from math to mental health. Many hail it as long-overdue catch-up to the level of prep offered in other provinces.

But universities say they fear the extra time and cost may be scaring some off — especially mature students, often from the trades, who can’t afford two years without an income.”

The online article also includes a chart Teacher College By the Numbers and includes data like the number of expected grads at the end of 2017, available spots at certain universities, number of required practicum days, tuition fees.
