Coaches need to overcome classroom teacher distrust

May 2, 2016 at 8:00 am Leave a comment

The April issue of Phi Delta Kappan (97:7)  includes an article by Carla Finkelstein titled “Thank you so much for the Truth”(pp 19-24), subtitle: “Coaching teachers requires that you develop trust – not just in the  abstract but trust that in manifested in shared goals, open communication and mutual respect”.

Teachers resistance may not be surprising as they may perceive it  to be the result of a negative assessment,  inadequacy or deficiency with their practices.  (p. 20).

Finkelstein stresses the importance of building trust with the classroom teacher, and offers 4 recommendations to achieve this:

  1. Let the teachers ‘drive’ the PD
  2. Adopt a curious, problem-solving stance
  3. Walk the walk
  4. Communicate clearly and transparently

TDSB teachers may request a copy of the article (we’ll email it to you) by phoning the Professional Library (416) 395-8289 or emailing professionallibrary@tdsb.on.ca.

Check it out!
