20% time projects

At the TDSB Unleashing the Learning conference on April 19th , the final keynote was by Kevin Brookhouser who described his experiences implementing a 20%time project at his school.  The brilliant yours truly purchased a copy of his book The 20time Project and it will be available for circulation soon. If you can’t wait to read the book, check out this TEDx video and this web page.

Another great source is A.J.Juliani at this web page  – and yes the Professional Library does have his book titled Inquiry and Innovation in the Classroom. Also check out his Edutopia blog titled Why “20% time” is good for schools.

Another new book available from the Professional Library is : Cultivating genius: The why and how of creating a “20% time” learning project by Don Eckert who promotes 20% learning as improving learning and outcomes through personalization, from page 11: These learners will know how to approach a problem, analyze it, research it, prepare a first solution, tweak that solution, refine the solution, communicate the solution in a way that makes sense, and finally publish that solution.”

If this topic unleashes your passion to teach, contact the library for more information at (416) 395-8289 or professionallibrary@tdsb.on.ca. The makerspace concept is very similar and we can provide lots of resources on that too.
