On February 22, the Toronto Star included an article by Louise Brown titled “Young Grads must brush up on skills, schools told”.Whereas many universities believe that they are graduating students equipped for the workforce, many employees believe that the students are lacking skills in core literacy and numeracy and problem-solving.

The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario “is looking for several colleges and universities to submit their incoming students to a 90-minute online test of literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills and give the same test to the graduating class as they leave” (p. A1) See the HEQCO page on Learning Outcomes. The news report indicates students would be given the Education and Skills Online Assessment from the OECD.

The article also references the study/report titled Youth in Transition: Bridging Canada’s Path from Education to Employment by McKinsey & Company
