TDSB Research releases monograph on inclusive schools and classrooms

In December, the TDSB Research & Information Services department, released a document titled:  Inclusion: Creating school and classroom communities where everyone belongs: Research, tips, and tools for educators and administrators (Report 15/16-09).  The  document has been made publically available on their Publications > Student Engagement and Experiences page, here.

From their site (with a smidge of editing by me): “The newly released report entitled Inclusion – Creating School and Classroom Communities Where Everyone Belongs is a follow up to the TDSB report, Inclusive education: A case for Inclusive education (2014) .  While its predecessor looked at why an inclusive model of education is important, this new report closely explores what constitutes inclusion and provides relevant research and strategies into how educators and administrators can realize its potential. The report discusses what inclusion is, is not, and relates the research to the TDSB School Effectiveness Framework (pages 17-20).

Pages 5-8 discuss what educators must do to be inclusive:

  • Value difference and celebrate diversity
  • Treat “learning as a relational process in which both students and teachers are engaged in learning from each other and discovering ways to work together” (Greenstein, 2013, p. 386).
  • Practice student‐centred pedagogy over curriculum‐centred pedagogy (McDonnell, 1998 as cited in Mitchel, 2010).
  • Ensure accessibility to curriculum (Greenstein, 2013).
  • Consider the end goal to be participation and meaningful engagement as well as promote mastery of skills (Underwood, 2013).
  • Provide support within the classroom (Davis & Hopwood, 2002)
  • Promote students’ sense of belonging (Parekh, 2014)
  • Support the self‐organization of students with disabilities (Greenstein, 2013)
  • Set goals and organize in collaboration with community, parents, educators, local government and non‐government agencies (Mitchell, 2010).
  • Demonstrate strong leadership that supports inclusion (Stanovich & Jordan, 1998; Underwood, 2013).
