Full-Day Kindergarten debate: Effective or ‘Expensive Daycare’

Recently my home subscription to the Globe and Mail has included the National Post (I confess that I rarely read it), and the Tuesday June 23rd issue included an article by Sarah Boesveld titled “More than expensive daycare?” In this extensive news article, the author addresses this issue, discussing both sides of this debate … and the online version includes interviews, videos etc.

The articles refers to a couple of reports, without actually providing the titles or links. Have you noticed how reporters do this? The librarian  in me finds this very irritating, but that’s what I am here for. So to the best of my humble ability, hoping that these are accurate, here are the links to the reports mentioned in this article.

Fall 2012, by researchers at Queen’s U and Brock U: Final Report: Evaluation of the Implementation of the Ontario Full-Day Early Learning-Kindergarten Program.

2006 or 2007. Philip DeCicca from McMaster U:  Does full-day kindergarten matter? Evidence from the first 2 years of schooling

Janette Pelletier (OISE). I could not figure out the exact report to which the reporter was referring to, so here are 2 publicly available articles/reports:

Finally, here is the link the Ministry’s Full-day Kindergarten page: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/kindergarten/ and the EduGain Early Primary site http://www.edugains.ca/newsite/earlyPrimary/index.html

This would be a great research project for anyone taking Early Learning AQ courses!

Check them out,  Rowan
