New Canadian resources on Bullying

The newly released March 2015  issue of Professional Speaking includes an article by John Hoffman titled  Bully-Proofing Strategies for Prevention and Intervention (starting page 34).

So that got me thinking that it had been a while since I checked out Prevnet, one of Canada’s key research-based Internet sites on this topic, and I reviewed content that I had not seen before.

Prevnet has released a series of downloadable resources under the heading / page – Bullying Prevention: Factsheets &Tools for Schools – and there are lots of them under the following section headings: Introduction;  Education (eg Key elements of a whole school approach to prevent bullying and promote healthy relationships); Assessment (eg environmental scan); Prevention and Intervention (eg what to do with a child or youth who engages in bullying); and Policy (eg  communicating the schools plan)

Prevent also has 3 Infographics, also downloadable and great for classrooms,  including:

  1. Healthy Relationships
  2. Cyberbullying
  3. Bullying  the facts

Prevnet also pointed me to February 2015 Angus Reid Institute bullying survey titled: “three-quarters of Canadian adults say they were bullied in school: half of today’s parents say it’s happened to their kids”  Read the poll / results at:

From the conclusion” “Even though nine-in-ten (89%) Canadians agree (47% strongly) that “kids who bully others need to be dealt with much more severely”, they are pessimistic about an end to the behaviour in schools. Three-quarters agree “bullying is never going to go away, no matter what new policies or approaches are tried”.As much as Canadians see this as a serious issue requiring more attention, they also sadly, see the fight as an ongoing one.”

Whew! Lots to read, but totally worth checking out! The Professional Library can provide TDSB teachers with LOTS of books and articles on this topic – just contact us at or phone (416) 395-8289.
