Michael Fullan and Alan Boyle have released a 2014 book titled Big-City School Reforms: Lessons from New York, Toronto, and London, published simultaneously by the Teachers College Press and the Ontario Principal’s Council.

In the book, they weigh problems against the forces that drive systems forward.

“Yet TDSB was remarkably successful in relation to the bottom line of instructional improvement and corresponding student achievement” (P. 101).

TDSB’s successes have included , from page 101: “a critical mass of leaders … able to maintain a focus on instruction; built-in commitment to excellence and equity; mechanisms and strategies focusing on student achievement that preceded the province’s  strategy …  Although local politics and governance served up constant distractions, these issues did not intrude directly in the teaching and learning domain”. (p. 101)

TDSB teachers may borrow this book by contacting the Library at (416) 395-8289 or professionallibrary@tdab.on.ca.
