EduGains Literacy: Text Structure

EduGains has released two  secondary Literacy Alerts, and one is titled Make Room for Building Knowledge of Text Structure.

From page one of the alert/monograph:

“Students benefit from explicit instruction about text structures because it helps readers navigate the text to anticipate or predict what to expect, determine the most important parts, make meaning of the information presented, and recall information (Duke et al., 2011). When students understand text structures, they can also apply the same patterns to organize their thinking and writing” (p 1) .

The documents also includes a chart (with sample graphic organizers) that discusses the structures:

  • description
  • compare/ contrast
  • sequential/procedural/chronological
  • cause and effect
  • problem solving

Check it out. Be aware that, today, this  morning,  on the Literacy Alert page, the links/titles are mixed up– which is easy to happen speaking from experience however I think I have made the correct link adjustments in this post.
